Local Niche Fitness Company “Bumps Up” Its Online Studio Offerings

March 30, 2021

The Functional Bump Fitness Studio owners Amanda Fay and Kieran Doucette know what it means to be flexible and multitask. As entrepreneurs, specialists in health and wellness and moms to young children, they opened The Functional Bump (TFB) in 2019 with hopes of growing the business in 2020. TFB started as an in-person fitness studio located in Concord. Their goal was to provide a unique brand of fitness designed for moms of all stages - from pre-conception through postnatal life and beyond. They were well on their way to building their clientele when the pandemic caused them to change course.

A sampling of their customized online studio includes:  Funky Breathing Foundations, a Prenatal Series including Funky Birth Intervals,a postnatal series including  Funky Mom Intervals, Pre and Postnatal Mobility, Funky Full Body, Funky Blasts for Core and Arms, and Funky “Fixes” for Lower Back and other areas as well their fun “Funky Live Workouts” each month and private training as well.

To keep the sense of community still alive, the Funky Bump team holds live workouts monthly via zoom. Members workout from the comfort of their own homes but they still feel like part of a group fitness class with all their coaches and moms alike.

The Functional Bump team loves being a part of the community. Since their creation, they have held numerous free workshops as well as outdoor workouts at local parks in New Hampshire. In 2019, TFB attended the NH Mama and Baby Expo where they gave a workshop on prenatal nutrition and led a group exercise class to the crowd. Also in 2019, The Functional Bump was extremely proud to attend the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day New Hampshire Statewide Conference where Coach Amanda presented The Functional Bump business concepts and won the Shark Tank style pitch contest!

As pioneers in this area for this niche fitness offering, they are proud to offer a one stop source for all aspects of movement and wellness for preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum. Classes focus on areas such as deep core healing and conditioning, functional training, high intensity interval training, and flexibility training.

The mission of this wellness studio is to lead women to move, think, and breathe throughout their preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum journeys to be stronger and more “functional” than they ever have been before! Owners Doucette and Fay not only believe this 100%, they live it. Fay explains that, “To be functional means to move through daily life effectively and efficiently, reducing wear and tear and imbalances in the body. It’s proven that this type of balanced lifestyle helps reduce injury and pain in the future.”

One of their goals for this year is to increase their base of members who want to stay on an extended fitness journey with them. As part of this, they’re offering a free week trial on their studio site in hopes that those sample classes are enough to get moms “hooked” on being “Funky”. Memberships are configured in many ways, but the most desirable are the annual memberships that cover a full pregnancy through postnatal.

This ambitious duo is also looking to expand their online business beyond the local area. They’re launching an early spring Facebook Ad campaign to reach a much broader scope of Funky mamas well beyond NH! Doucette and Fay will also be expanding their efforts to brand their clothing and studio, by partnering with online maternity boutiques, health food companies as well as local pediatrician offices and hospitals.

Along with many other workout and fitness clubs this past year, they took a chance on converting their business over to online and they have never looked back!

As co-owner of The Functional Bump, Amanda Fay’s inspiration for the business actually started in 2013 when she and her husband realized they wanted kids. It was at that moment, she says “I started preparing my mind and body and, being a super planner, I set out to do just that.” After a lot of research, she understood that an holistic approach to pre and postnatal care could bring about future generations of vibrant health. With a BS from Endicott college, Amanda specializes in corrective exercise, non invasive diastasis protocols (a condition where abdominal muscles are separated during pregnancy), fertility awareness, group fitness, and fitness nutrition. She is also a Certified Personal Trainer who asserts that the most rewarding part of her job is empowering other women to think differently!

As a DONA trained Birth Doula, Certified HypnoBirthing Practitioner, Pre and Postnatal Corrective Exercise Specialist and co-owner of The Functional Bump, Kieran Doucette is passionate about working with soon-to-be and new mamas!  “I’ve loved watching their journeys, hearing their stories and seeing them grow their families”, says Doucette.  When she started her own family she decided to take steps to work in this growing health and wellness area and set out to gather the knowledge she needed to start a business. What she finds most rewarding is building women’s strength and confidence through fitness.  “Preparing women to labor and deliver babies and helping them to sustain and build strength back after birth has been a privilege”, she says.  Doucette lives in Canterbury, NH with her husband and two children, where they love the outdoors, raising chickens, and lots of family time!
